Dry eyes
Dry eye syndrome is very common and is a result of inadequate lubrication from the tears in the eyes.
Tears can provide inadequate lubrication due to insufficient amounts of tears or due production of poor-quality tears, resulting in dry eyes. This tear instability causes inflammation and damage to the eye's surface.
Dry eyes can feel uncomfortable and symptoms include:
- A stinging, burning or scratchy eyes
- Stringy mucus in or around your eyes
- Eye redness
- The feeling something is in your eyes
- Difficulty with nighttime driving
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred vision or eye fatigue
Your eyes may feel more dry in certain situations, such as on an airplane, in an air-conditioned room or after looking at a computer screen for a few hours.
Treatments for dry eyes make symptoms manageable. These can include lifestyle changes and eyedrops.
